What We Do
We research the "near space" or "middle atmosphere" environment at ~10-100 km altitude, located between conventional weather at ~0-10 km and space weather above 100 km. We develop global forecasting technologies that couple surface and space weather to support emerging DoD systems that operate at these altitudes.

NAVGEM Goes Operational on 13 February 2013
The next-generation Navy Global Environmental Model (NAVGEM) replaced NOGAPS as the Navy's operational global numerical weather prediction system, going operational for the first time at Fleet Numerical on 13 February 2013.

John McCormack Receives 2011 GRL Excellence in Reviewing Award
On 6 August 2012, NSE scientist Dr. John McCormack was awarded a 2011 Editors' Citation for Excellence in Refereeing for AGU's flagship journal Geophysical Research Letters (GRL). This award recognizes Dr. McCormack's contributions in maintaining the highest standard of scientific quality in GRL publications through the peer-review process.
