LATEST MWFM FORECAST SUMMARY (Eckermann, 23 March, 1100EST):
Synoptic Overview → MWFM-NOGAPS and MWFM-GFS forecasts show persistent eastward flow over southern South America out to the 25th and beyond, and weak winds over the Palmer Peninsula. A low pressure cell produces southward winds over the Palmer Peninsula on the 24th., backing to weak westward flow on 26th. as the low moves eastward.
23 March → No significant turbulence except perhaps some light turbulence on the southernmost tip of South America at FL~230-300.
24 March → Light-moderate turbulence over Palmer Peninsula.
25 MarchModerate turbulence over regions of the Palmer Peninsula at FL~220-400 as flow backs during this period. Possible moderate turbulence over west coast of central Chile at high flight levels ~FL400-450.

  • An NCEP GFS  forecast job runs at ~01:00 EST, and  13:00 EST each day, acquiring the 0Z and 12Z initialized forecast cycles of the NCEP GFS model directly from NCEP.

  • The NOGAPS forecast job runs twice daily runs at  ~10:00 EST and ~22:00 EST, utilizing the NOGAPS 0Z and 12Z FNMOC forecast update cycles, respectively. You can keep track of today's MWFM-NOGAPS forecast runs by checking the logfile.

  • Turbulence Intensities  400-300 hPa (~FL220-300)
