Mountain Wave Forecasts for PAVE Using a 3D Anelastic Nonlinear Orographic Model (3DLOM)

INITIALIZED USING +48 HOUR PROFILE FROM NMC GLOBAL FORECAST FIELDS

The 3D orographic model

3DLOM is an anelastic and non-linear orographic model in terrain-following coordinates. Free-slip, or frictionless, lower boundary conditions are used, as well as radiative lateral boundaries and a rigid-lid scheme for the upper boundary. The model has a 128 x 128 x 28 domain, h = 5 km, z = 1 km, and t = 6 s, and the model is integrated to a steady-state solution for 2000 timesteps.

For PAVE, 3DLOM is being run within 2 different geographical regions: New England and Southern Greenland. The orography is based on the USGS GTOPO30 database, smoothed with boxcar averaging to the model resolution, and is shown below on the links to the individual regions. The plot at the bottom of the page shows how these domains relate to the MWFM forecasting domain (red) over the United States. The model is initialized with a NOGAPS or NCEP global model profile, and is operated by the Middle Atmospheric Dynamics Section of the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC.
